Liviu Barbulescu is an animator and visual artist with a focus on explanatory videos. He grew up surrounded by “plattenbaus” in Bucharest and currently he is based in Berlin. He likes telling stories in unexpected ways about memory, history and time. Part of the Headlights collective.
A webcomic that documents the decline of democracy and the rise of extremism in Romanian society in the 1930s and 1940s. Illustrated and animated together with Răzvan Petre and Lu Pop. Special mention in the cross media category at Bologna Children’s book fair
Animated short-movie. Rather than relying on conventional documentary realism, the film uses stylisation and symbolism to invite reflection. Animation allows for a mediated engagement with a traumatic past without reproducing explicit imagery of suffering. The result is a work that is both visually distinctive and politically sharp. It does not simply recount history. It questions how that history has been narrated, remembered, or omitted.
A series of 5 educational videos for teenagers, done together with SNOOP and Răzvan Petre on the topics of: democracy, the climate emergency, media literacy and AI, hidden gambling in computer games and teenage loneliness.

The Climate Lottery is a Climate education project that I initiated together with Alex Lungu. Consists of a series of educational videos and a traveling exhibition built around a custom made arcade game.
